For centuries since, historians have come up with several theories for his mysterious death. A popular theory that was supported by one of his close friends was that Poe had drank himself to his death, a theory that would also be pushed by Poe’s bitterest enemies. Another theory was that he had been a victim of “cooping,” a form of electoral fraud in which gangs would abduct citizens and force them to drink and then take them to polling stations to vote for the same candidate.
